Google patents TV summaries that help you catch up after pausing live streams
This filing describes a system that pauses a live video stream and uses machine learning to identify important events that happened while you were away. It then displays short summaries of these events, allowing you to click one and jump the video back to the exact moment that event started.
In the filing’s own words
A computing device outputs, for display, a video livestream including content for events occurring in real-time or near real-time. Responsive to receiving a user input that pauses the livestream, the computing device receives the content, and identifies at least a first event by applying a machine learning model to the content. The first event may have a threshold level of importance and may begin at a time between a time at which the livestream was paused and a time at which the livestream is live. The computing device generates a summary of the first event by applying the machine learning model to the content, and outputs, for display, an indication of the summary. Responsive to receiving a user input that selects the indication of the summary of the first event, the computing device adjusts a playback position of the livestream to the time at which the first event begins.
What exactly they claim (claim 1)
1. A method comprising: outputting, by a computing device and for display, a graphical user interface including a video livestream that is transmitted to the computing device in real-time or near real-time, wherein the video livestream includes content for a plurality of events occurring in real-time or near real-time; responsive to receiving a user input that pauses the video livestream within the graphical user interface, receiving, by the computing device, the content for the plurality of events; while the video livestream is paused within the graphical user interface: identifying, by the computing device, a subset of events from the plurality of events by at least applying a machine learning model to the content, wherein each event from the subset of events has at least a threshold level of importance, and wherein each event from the subset of events begins at a respective time between a time at which the video livestream was paused and a time at which the video livestream is live; generating, by the computing device, a respective summary of each event from the subset of events by at least applying the machine learning model to the content; and updating, by the computing device, the graphical user interface to present a respective indication of each respective summary, wherein the graphical user interface is continuously updated to present each respective indication of each respective summary that is generated until the computing device receives a request to adjust a playback position of the video livestream to the time at which the video livestream is live; and responsive to receiving a user input that selects the respective indication of the respective summary of a respective event, adjusting, by the computing device, a playback position of the video livestream to the respective time at which the respective event begins.
