Nvidia patents video streaming tweaks to handle bad internet connections
Nvidia describes a method for video processors to adjust how frames are compressed based on how many frames have been sent. By setting a minimum gap between key frames and the frames that depend on them, the system aims to reduce delay and improve error handling when the network is unstable.
In the filing’s own words
In various examples, systems, devices and methods are disclosed relating to enhancing the efficiency and reducing the delay of error resilience in multimedia communication systems. The systems, devices and methods can include a computer system determining a sliding frame window (or a sliding reference window) for a video stream. The size of the sliding frame window represents a minimum separation between reference frames and corresponding inter frames. The computer system can encode a plurality of video frames of the video stream according to the size of the sliding frame window, such that a separation between any pair of video frames of the plurality of video frames including a reference frame and a corresponding inter-frame is greater than or equal to the size of the sliding frame window.
What exactly they claim (claim 1)
1. A processor, comprising: one or more circuits to: determine a size of a frame window for a video stream, the size of the frame window representing a minimum separation between at least one inter frame and a corresponding reference frame, wherein determining the size of the frame window comprises: determine one or more counts of video frames transmitted after transmission of one or more previously transmitted video frames; and encode or compress a plurality of video frames of the video stream according to the size of the frame window.
