Sony patents tape cartridge that stays stable in heat
Sony describes a magnetic tape cartridge designed to keep its width consistent even after being stored at 65°C for 360 hours. The tape uses a specific material stiffness and asymmetric servo patterns to prevent the tape from stretching or shrinking unevenly during long-term storage.
In the filing’s own words
An object is to provide a magnetic recording cartridge suited for storage and running under a high-temperature environment. A magnetic recording cartridge that includes a cartridge case, a reel, and a magnetic recording medium, in which when a width change amount of the magnetic recording medium is measured across an entire length of the magnetic recording medium after being stored at 65° C. for 360 hours, a sign of a width change amount Δout on an outer winding side of the magnetic recording medium and a sign of a width change amount Δin on an inner winding side of the magnetic recording medium differ, and the width change amount is 0 ppm at a position of one of two regions between which a center line of the entire length of the magnetic recording medium is situated, the two regions being from among four regions into which the entire length of the magnetic recording medium is quadrisected; the magnetic recording medium includes a plurality of servo bands in each of which servo patterns including a first servo pattern and a second servo pattern are written, the first servo pattern and second servo pattern being asymmetric with respect to a width direction of the magnetic recording medium; and the servo patterns in the servo bands adjacent to each other have a phase difference.
What exactly they claim (claim 1)
1. A magnetic recording cartridge, comprising: a cartridge case; a reel; and a magnetic recording medium wound on the reel, the wound magnetic recording medium being accommodated in the cartridge case, wherein when a width change amount of the magnetic recording medium is measured across an entire length of the magnetic recording medium after the magnetic recording medium wound on the reel is stored at 65° C. for 360 hours, a sign of a width change amount Δout on an outer winding side of the magnetic recording medium and a sign of a width change amount Δin on an inner winding side of the magnetic recording medium differ, the width change amount is 0 ppm at a position of one of two regions between which a center line of the entire length of the magnetic recording medium is situated, the two regions being from among four regions into which the entire length of the magnetic recording medium is quadrisected, and an absolute value of the width change amount is 300 ppm or less in any of the four regions, the magnetic recording medium includes a base layer having a loss elastic modulus of 0.40 GPa or less at 65° C., the magnetic recording medium includes a plurality of servo bands in each of which servo patterns including a first servo pattern and a second servo pattern are written, the first servo pattern and second servo pattern being asymmetric with respect to a width direction of the magnetic recording medium, and the servo patterns in the servo bands adjacent to each other have a phase difference.
