Samsung has filed a patent for a method that helps electronic devices recognize user hand gestures more accurately. The system captures video frames of the user's body and estimates the background to figure out how the device itself is moving. By separating the device's motion from the user's hand movement, the device can better determine the intended gesture.

The method includes capturing, by an electronic device, a plurality of frames including a part of a body of the user, estimating, by the electronic device, a plurality of background planes for each frame of the plurality of frames, based on the estimation, identifying, by the electronic device, a movement of the plurality of background planes, based on the identifying of the movement of the plurality of background planes, estimating, by the electronic device, a movement direction of the electronic device, and based on the estimated movement direction of the electronic device, determining, by the electronic device, the gesture of the user while the gesture is detected by the electronic device.
