Samsung patents phone that slides open to enlarge screen
Samsung has filed a patent for a smartphone with a sliding mechanism that physically moves part of the housing to reveal more of a flexible display. The device adjusts the screen's refresh rate during the slide to keep the image stable as the visible area expands.
In the filing’s own words
A slidable electronic device is provided. The slidable electronic device includes memory, including one or more storage media, storing instructions, a housing including a first housing part and a second housing part that is movably engaged with the first housing part, an actuator configured to move the second housing part with respect to the first housing part, a flexible display coupled to the first housing part and the second housing part such that the size of an area, which is visible from the front side of the housing, changes as the second housing part is moved with respect to the first housing part, and one or more processors communicatively coupled to the memory, wherein the instructions, when executed by the one or more processors individually or collectively, cause the slidable electronic device to receive an input for extending the area, while a screen is displayed on the area, control, in response to the input, the actuator to move the second housing part with respect to the first housing part, and cause, while the area is extended in accordance with the second housing part being moved with respect to the first housing part in response to the input, the flexible display to change a refresh rate of the screen that is extended on the area, according to a rate at which the area is extended.
What exactly they claim (claim 1)
1. A slidable electronic device comprising: memory, including one or more storage media, storing instructions; a housing including a first housing part and a second housing part that is movably engaged with the first housing part; an actuator configured to move the second housing part with respect to the first housing part; a flexible display coupled to the first housing part and the second housing part such that a size of an area of the flexible display that is visible from a front side of the housing changes as the second housing part is moved with respect to the first housing part; and one or more processors, wherein the instructions, when executed by the one or more processors individually or collectively, cause the slidable electronic device to: receive an input for extending the area, while a screen is displayed on the area, control, in response to the input, the actuator to move the second housing part with respect to the first housing part, and cause, while the area is extended in accordance with the second housing part being moved with respect to the first housing part in response to the input, the flexible display to change a refresh rate of the screen that is extended on the area, according to a rate at which the area is extended.
