Google patents AI to adjust video zoom in virtual meetings
This filing describes a system that uses AI to change how a video camera frames a person during a virtual meeting. It takes a standard video feed and generates a new image that looks like it was shot with a different zoom level, based on where the person is standing.
In the filing’s own words
Aspects of the disclosure are directed to improving image quality of a virtual meeting using artificial intelligence. An image depicting at least one participant of the virtual meeting in an environment is obtained during the meeting. The image is captured by a camera component having a first focal length. A target focal length for the image is determined during the meeting based on a position of the participant in the environment. The image and the target focal length are provided as an input to an artificial intelligence (AI) model. One or more outputs of the AI model are obtained, the output(s) including a generated image depicting the participant in the environment as would be captured by another camera component having a second focal length corresponding to the target focal length. The generated image is provided for presentation via one or more client devices associated with the participants during the meeting.
What exactly they claim (claim 1)
1. A method comprising: obtaining, during a virtual meeting, an image depicting at least one participant of a plurality of participants of the virtual meeting in an environment, wherein the image is captured by a camera component having a first focal length; determining, during the virtual meeting, a target focal length for the image based on a position of the at least one participant in the environment; providing, during the virtual meeting, the image and the target focal length as an input to an artificial intelligence (AI) model; obtaining, during the virtual meeting, one or more outputs of the AI model, the one or more outputs comprising a generated image depicting the at least one participant in the environment as would be captured by another camera component having a second focal length corresponding to the target focal length; and providing, during the virtual meeting, the generated image for presentation via one or more client devices associated with the plurality of participants.
