Google patents video coding method to pick best motion vectors
This filing describes a method for compressing video by finding the best way to predict how parts of an image move. It tests different movement guesses against pairs of previous frames to find the one that matches most closely.
In the filing’s own words
Candidate motion vectors are identified from neighboring blocks of a block of a current frame. Pairs of reference frames are identified from available reference frames for the current frame. For each candidate motion vector of at least some of the candidate motion vectors and each pair of reference frame from at least some of the pairs of reference frames, where the each pair of reference frames includes a first reference frame and a second reference frame, a first reference block is obtained from the first reference frame based on the each candidate motion vector; a second reference block is obtained from the second reference frame based on the each candidate motion vector; and an error is calculated between the first reference block and the second reference block. The candidate motion vector that results in the minimum calculated error is assigned as a motion vector for the block.
What exactly they claim (claim 1)
1. A method, comprising: identifying candidate motion vectors from neighboring blocks of a block of a current frame; identifying pairs of reference frames from available reference frames for the current frame; for each candidate motion vector of at least some of the candidate motion vectors and each pair of reference frame from at least some of the pairs of reference frames, wherein the each pair of reference frames includes a first reference frame and a second reference frame: obtaining a first reference block from the first reference frame based on the each candidate motion vector; obtaining a second reference block from the second reference frame based on the each candidate motion vector; and calculating an error between the first reference block and the second reference block; and assigning the candidate motion vector that results in a minimum calculated error as a motion vector for the block.
