Samsung patents avatars that update to match your changing face

Patent drawing
Patent drawing from the official filing.

Samsung describes a method where an electronic device periodically checks stored photos to see if a user's facial features have changed. If the differences between the photo and the current avatar exceed a set limit, the system automatically adjusts the avatar's graphic elements to better match the user's appearance.

Why it mattersThis could keep digital profiles in social apps or games looking accurate over time without requiring users to manually re-upload photos or adjust settings.

In the filing’s own words

An electronic device is provided. The electronic device includes a memory and at least one processor. The at least one processor may be configured to determine at least one image including a first face corresponding to a designated face, among one or more images stored in the memory, obtain first values of a plurality of attributes related to the first face, compare, for each attribute, the first values of the plurality of attributes related to the first face with second values of a plurality of attributes corresponding to graphic objects constituting an avatar, the graphic objects being stored in the memory, identify whether at least one first attribute exists among the plurality of attributes related to the first face, the at least one first attribute having a first value among the first values, a difference between the first value and a second value of the at least one first attribute being equal to or greater than a threshold, the second value being included the second values, and based on identifying that at least one first attribute exists among the plurality of attributes related to the first face, update the avatar, based on the first value of the at least one first attribute.

What exactly they claim (claim 1)

1. An electronic device comprising: at least one processor; and memory storing instructions that, when executed by the at least one processor individually or collectively, cause the electronic device to: identify whether a designated time elapses from a first time when an avatar is updated or newly created, and based on identifying that the designated time elapses from the first time, perform an avatar providing function, wherein the avatar providing function comprises to: determine at least one first image including a first face, obtain first values of a plurality of attributes related to the first face, compare, for each attribute, the first values of the plurality of attributes related to the first face with second values of a plurality of attributes corresponding to graphic objects included in the avatar, and based on comparing, for each attribute, the first values with the second values, update the avatar.
