Samsung patents method to read compressed files using temporary virtual memory
The filing describes a way for an electronic device to read compressed files by temporarily assigning a section of virtual memory to handle the decompression process. Once the file system is released, the device frees up that memory space to be used for other tasks.
In the filing’s own words
An electronic device for reading a compressed file may include: a memory storing at least one instruction; and at least one processor. comprising processing circuitry, individually and/or collectively, configured to execute the at least one instruction and to cause the electronic device to: register at least one file system, use virtual memory to read compressed data included in the at least one file system based on a read request occurring, and release the at least one file system. Based on the at least one file system being registered, the virtual memory may be allocated an address space and used to decompress the compressed data based on the read request. Based on the at least one file system being released, the address space may be released.
What exactly they claim (claim 1)
1. An electronic device for reading a compressed file, comprising: memory storing at least one instruction; and at least one processor, comprising processing circuitry, individually and/or collectively, configured to execute the at least one instruction, and to cause the electronic device to: register at least one file system; read compressed data included in the at least one file system using virtual memory based on a read request occurring; and release the at least one file system, wherein the virtual memory includes an address space allocated based on the at least one file system being registered, is configured for decompression of the compressed data based on the read request, and includes the address space released based on the at least one file system being released.
