Sony patents LCD screen with raised electrodes to control liquid crystals
Sony has filed a patent for a liquid crystal display that uses electrodes with small raised sections, or standing parts, facing the liquid crystal layer. These raised sections help the pixel circuits apply voltage to control how the liquid crystals align and display colors.
In the filing’s own words
A liquid crystal display device according to an embodiment of the present disclosure includes: a liquid crystal layer; a first substrate including a pixel circuit that drives the liquid crystal layer for each of pixels; a second substrate disposed to be opposed to the first substrate with the liquid crystal layer interposed therebetween; and multiple first electrodes that are provided on the first substrate for the respective pixels and each include one or more standing parts standing toward the liquid crystal layer, a predetermined voltage being applied to each of the multiple first electrodes by the pixel circuit.
What exactly they claim (claim 1)
1. A liquid crystal display device comprising: a liquid crystal layer; a first substrate including a pixel circuit that drives the liquid crystal layer for each of pixels; a second substrate disposed to be opposed to the first substrate with the liquid crystal layer interposed therebetween; and multiple first electrodes that are provided on the first substrate for the respective pixels and each include one or more standing parts standing toward the liquid crystal layer, a predetermined voltage being applied to each of the multiple first electrodes by the pixel circuit.
