Disney patents remote control system for testing media players

Patent drawing
Patent drawing from the official filing.

Disney has filed a patent for a system that lets users control and test media player devices from a distance using a separate testing device. The system displays a virtual remote on the user's screen and shows the live video output from the media player in real-time as commands are sent.

Why it mattersThis filing suggests Disney is looking for ways to streamline the technical testing of its media hardware, potentially improving how engineers verify device performance without being physically present.

In the filing’s own words

A system and method for controlling and testing at least one remote media player device using a corresponding remote testing device and at least one user device not collocated with the remote testing device includes receiving from a user a selection of an available remote testing device, displaying on the user device a remote-control image or a list of automated tests, receiving from the user a selection of one of a remote-control command or an automated test as the selected remote command, sending the selected remote command to the selected remote testing device, receiving from the selected remote testing device a video output signal indicative of a medial player video output signal from the media player device in response to the selected remote command, and displaying the received video output signal on the user device simultaneously with the displaying of the remote-control image, while simultaneously performing the receiving and the sending of the selected remote commands.

What exactly they claim (claim 1)

1. A computer-based user device for controlling and testing at least one remote media player device using a corresponding remote testing (RT) device and the user device being not collocated with the remote testing (RT) device, comprising: a processor configured to display on the user device selectable available remote testing (RT) devices and corresponding remote media player devices; the processor further configured to receive from a user a selection of at least one of the available remote testing devices as a selected remote testing device; the processor further configured to display on the user device a remote-control image having selectable remote-control commands corresponding to the selected remote testing device and its associated remote media player device; the processor further configured to receive from the user a selection of one of the remote-control commands, as a selected remote command; the processor further configured to send the selected remote command to the selected remote testing device; the processor further configured to receive from the selected remote testing (RT) device, a video output signal indicative of a media player video output signal from the remote media player device in response to the selected remote command, wherein the video output signal is scraped from the media player video output signal by the RT device; and the processor further configured to display a video image of the received video output signal on the user device simultaneously with the displaying of the remote-control image, in separate portions of a display on the user device, while simultaneously the processor is further configured to receive and send the selected remote commands.
