Nvidia patents power circuit that combines two converters for better efficiency
Nvidia has filed a patent for a power conversion circuit that links two separate power trains using a coupling device. When current flows through both trains, it creates a specific interaction in the coupling device that improves performance across different operating conditions.
In the filing’s own words
Devices and methods are disclosed for power conversion using hybrid-switched capacitor converter (HSCC) devices. In at least one embodiment, an HSCC device includes a first power train, a second power train, and a coupling device. The first power train includes a first output terminal. The second power train includes a second output terminal. The coupling device includes, a first input terminal, a second input terminal and, a third output terminal. The first input terminal of the coupling device is connected to the first output terminal, and the second input terminal of the coupling device is connected to the second output terminal. Current from the first and second power trains induces coupling in the coupling device, enhancing performance across different states and various duty cycles.
What exactly they claim (claim 1)
1. A hybrid-switched capacitor converter (HSCC) circuit, comprising: a first power train comprising a first output terminal; a second power train comprising a second output terminal; and a coupling device comprising a first input terminal, a second input terminal, and a third output terminal, wherein the first input terminal of the coupling device is connected to the first output terminal, the second input terminal of the coupling device is connected to the second output terminal, and wherein current from the first power train and second power train induces negative coupling in the coupling device.
