Nvidia patents method to reduce duplicate texture loads in graphics chips

Patent drawing
Patent drawing from the official filing.

Nvidia has filed a patent for a way to make graphics processing units (GPUs) work more efficiently when applying textures to images. The system groups small tasks together and checks if multiple tasks need the same piece of image data. If they do, the chip ensures that data is only loaded once instead of multiple times.

Why it mattersThis is a routine optimization that helps computer graphics run slightly faster by reducing unnecessary work, which is standard practice for chip designers.

In the filing’s own words

Systems and methods are disclosed related to collaborative texture filtering. In at least one embodiment, in a graphics processing unit (GPU) executes a plurality of processing threads organized into waves. In at least one embodiment, redundant texel fetches are identified and one or more threads are reassigned to fetch unique texels through collaboration.

What exactly they claim (claim 1)

1. A method for collaborative texture filtering, comprising: receiving texture coordinates associated with rendered geometry that intersects a plurality of pixels for processing by a wave of threads; determining a set of texels to obtain based on the texture coordinates and a filtering mode to produce filtered texels, wherein the threads in the wave collaborate to remove at least one duplicate texel from the set of texels; obtaining texel values for the set of texels by the threads in the wave; and computing a set of filtered texels for the plurality of pixels using the texel values.
