OpenAI patents memory system for personalized AI chat responses
OpenAI has filed a patent for a system that gives AI chatbots a long-term memory of past conversations. It works by automatically summarizing old chats into natural language notes about the user, which are then added to the current conversation to make answers more relevant.
In the filing’s own words
Systems and methods for generating responses to user prompts using synthesized memories are disclosed. A generative response engine receives a prompt starting a conversation thread with a user account, along with a personalized memory state that includes curated knowledge about the user account and synthesized memories derived from past conversation threads involving the user account. The generative response engine uses this information to generate a response to the prompt. Synthesized memories include listings of topics and summaries of topics, which are created by evaluating past conversation threads and determining what information should be synthesized into the memories, allowing for more personalized and relevant responses to be generated.
What exactly they claim (claim 1)
1. A method comprising: receiving, by a system server, a prompt starting a conversation thread with a user account; inserting, by the system server, a personalized memory state into a context window for the conversation thread prior to starting an interference operation based on the prompt, wherein the personalized memory state includes curated facts in natural language about the user account and synthesized memories, the synthesized memories are natural-language narrative descriptions of the user account that were generated by a language model that periodically analyzes past conversation threads involving the user account in an asynchronous offline process prior to receipt of the prompt, a respective synthesized memory summarizing conceptual connections across multiple conversation threads and being stored as part of the personalized memory state in a persistent user profile to produce the natural-language narrative descriptions of the user account; and sending, by the system server, the prompt and the personalized memory state in the context window to a language model generative response engine to cause the generative response engine to generate a response to the prompt based on the prompt and the personalized memory state.
