Samsung patents method for optimizing how computers store numbers
Samsung has filed a patent for a way to represent numerical data more efficiently by dividing it into specific size ranges called levels. The system tests different ways to encode these levels, calculates the error for each, and selects the best structure to store the data.
In the filing’s own words
There is provided a method of and apparatus for representing data by setting level structures including individual levels by determining size ranges of target data, encoding, for all of the definable level structures, an exponent of the target data, and the exponent distinguishes each individual level, of the individual levels, forming a corresponding level structure of the level structures, determining, for all of the definable level structures, a first number of mantissa bits of the target data, the first number of mantissa bits corresponding to the each individual level forming the corresponding level structure, and calculating a level error corresponding to each of all of the definable level structures, and generating, based on the level error, a table including a final level structure, an encoded exponent corresponding to the final level structure, and a second number of mantissa bits corresponding to the final level structure.
What exactly they claim (claim 1)
1. A method of representing data, the method comprising: setting, as definable level structures, a plurality of level structures comprising a plurality of individual levels by determining size ranges of target data; encoding, for all of the definable level structures, an exponent of the target data, and the exponent distinguishes each individual level, of the plurality of individual levels, forming a corresponding level structure of the plurality of level structures; determining, for all of the definable level structures, a first number of mantissa bits of the target data, the first number of mantissa bits corresponding to the each individual level forming the corresponding level structure; and calculating a level error corresponding to each of all of the definable level structures, and generating, based on the level error, a table comprising a final level structure, an encoded exponent corresponding to the final level structure, and a second number of mantissa bits corresponding to the final level structure.
