Sony patents console design that balances airflow through top and bottom vents

Sony describes an electronic device with a cooling fan and vents on both the top and bottom surfaces. It includes an internal air path that connects the top and bottom, allowing air to flow between them if one vent pulls air in more strongly than the other.

Why it mattersThis design helps ensure the cooling fan gets enough air even if the device sits on a surface that blocks one of the vents.

In the filing’s own words

An electronic apparatus ( 10) includes a cooling fan ( 40) and an apparatus main body ( 20) that accommodates the cooling fan ( 40). The apparatus main body ( 20) has an upper main body air suction port ( 22 e) formed in an upper surface ( 22 a), a lower main body air suction port ( 23 e) formed in a lower surface ( 23 a), and an auxiliary air flow path (Pc) that extends through the apparatus main body ( 20) in the up-down direction and that allows an air flow from one of the upper side and the lower side in the apparatus main body ( 20) to the other side. With this configuration, even if there is a difference in air suction performance between the two main body air suction ports ( 22 e, 23 e), the air suction port that has the larger suction performance can be supplied with a sufficient amount of air.
