Samsung patents sliding phone design with hidden circuit boards
Samsung has filed a patent for an electronic device with a sliding mechanism that changes the visible screen size. The design uses a flexible display and multiple circuit boards that connect through a flexible path to maintain electrical contact as the device moves between open and closed states.
In the filing’s own words
An electronic device includes a housing that includes a first housing part and a second housing part that are movably coupled to each other, the second housing part including a conductive portion, a flexible display, a first printed circuit board (PCB) disposed in the first housing part, a second PCB disposed in the second housing part and electrically connected to the conductive portion, a third PCB disposed in the second housing part, and an electrical path extending from the second PCB, across a lateral side of the flexible display, to the third PCB. The third PCB is electrically connected to the second PCB via the electrical path.
What exactly they claim (claim 1)
1. An electronic device comprising: a housing including: a first housing part, and a second housing part configured to movably engage with the first housing part to provide a retracted state of the housing and an extended state of the housing, the second housing part including: a frame configured to accommodate a battery, and a slide cover at least partially surrounding the frame to accommodate the frame; a flexible display disposed at the first housing part and the second housing part such that a size of an area visible from a front side of the housing changes as a state of the housing is changed between the retracted state and the extended state, the flexible display including: a first portion visible to the front side of the housing, based on the housing being in the retracted state, and a second portion, not visible to the front side, at least partially positioned between the frame and the slide cover; a first printed circuit board (PCB) disposed at the first housing part; a second PCB disposed at the slide cover; and a third PCB disposed at the frame, wherein the second PCB is electrically connected to the first PCB through the third PCB, wherein the second PCB and the third PCB are electrically connected to each other at a space between a lateral side of the frame and a lateral side of the slide cover corresponding to the lateral side of the frame, wherein the first PCB and the third PCB are electrically connected to each other through a connecting member, the connecting member including a flexible portion at least partially deformable in response to a movement of the second housing part with respect to the first housing part, and wherein the second portion of the flexible display is configured to be inserted into a space between the second PCB and the third PCB, based on the state of the housing being changed from the extended state to the retracted state.
