Sony patents soil sensor that speeds up checks before watering
Sony describes a soil moisture sensor that adjusts how often it takes readings to save battery power. It measures soil moisture less frequently during normal times but increases the measurement rate just before the soil is scheduled to be watered.
In the filing’s own words
In a system that measures a parameter related to moisture of soil, power consumption is reduced. A sensor includes a measurement section and a control unit. In the sensor including the measurement section and the control unit, the measurement section measures the parameter related to the moisture of the soil. Furthermore, in the sensor including the measurement section and the control unit, the control unit controls a measurement frequency of the parameter within a first measurement period immediately before an irrigation timing to the soil to a value higher than a predetermined value, and controls the measurement frequency before the first measurement period to a value lower than the predetermined value.
What exactly they claim (claim 1)
1. A sensor comprising: a measurement section that measures a parameter related to moisture of soil; and a control unit that controls a measurement frequency of the parameter within a first measurement period immediately before an irrigation timing to the soil to a value higher than a predetermined value, and controls the measurement frequency before the first measurement period to a value lower than the predetermined value.
