Samsung patents washing machine that recycles warm air to dry clothes
Samsung describes a washing machine design that uses a specific path to move air from the back of the drum to the top. The air passes through a heat exchanger to remove moisture and warm up before being blown back into the drum to dry the laundry.
In the filing’s own words
A washing machine with drying function includes a cabinet, a tub inside the cabinet, and provided with a front opening to allow laundry to be introduced and removed and a back opening, a drum rotatable inside the tub. A heated air supplying device which includes a heat exchange part, an inlet duct disposed at one side of the tub, and formed to guide air that is introduced from a rear side of the heated air supplying device toward the heat exchange part, a supply duct disposed at another side of the tub, and formed to guide air that passed the heat exchange part to be discharged to a front side of the heated air supplying device, and a fan at a front side the tub, and configured to cause an airflow such that air being discharged from the supply duct is supplied to the front opening of the tub.
What exactly they claim (claim 1)
1. A washing machine with drying function, comprising: a cabinet; a tub in the cabinet; a drum that is rotatable, in the tub and in which laundry is placeable; a rear flow path at a rear side of the tub and through which air discharged from the drum is moveable; an upper flow path above the tub, connected to the rear flow path, and including a heat exchange part configured to remove moisture from and heat air discharged from the rear flow path such that the air discharged from the rear flow path becomes dry heated air; and a duct connected to the upper flow path and including a fan, wherein the upper flow path and the duct are configured such that the air discharged from the rear flow path: is flowable into a rear of the upper flow path, then is flowable along the upper flow path in a first direction from a first side of the upper flow path toward a second side of the upper flow path through the heat exchange part, and then is flowable in a second direction different from the first direction and is introducible into the duct, and the air introducible into the duct is flowable in a third direction different from the first direction and the second direction and is dischargeable into the tub.
