Samsung patents method to fix audio-video lag in wireless devices
Samsung has filed a patent for a method that keeps sound and picture in sync when data is sent wirelessly between two devices. The system compares labels on video and audio frames; if they match, it plays both at normal speed. If the audio label is ahead, it plays the audio slightly faster to catch up to the video without changing the video speed.
In the filing’s own words
A method of synchronizing audio and video comprises receiving, by a first electronic device, video frame data and audio frame data from a second electronic device through wireless communication; playing, by the first electronic device, video and audio at a first playback speed based on an index of the video frame data being the same as an index of the audio frame data; and playing, by the first electronic device, the audio at a second playback speed faster than the first playback speed while maintaining the playback speed of the video at the first playback speed, based on the index of the video frame data being different from the index of the audio frame data.
What exactly they claim (claim 1)
1. A method of synchronizing audio and video, the method comprising: receiving, by a first electronic device, video frame data and audio frame data from a second electronic device through wireless communication; playing, by the first electronic device, video and audio at a first playback speed based on an index of the video frame data being the same as an index of the audio frame data; and playing, by the first electronic device, the audio at a second playback speed faster than the first playback speed while maintaining the playback speed of the video at the first playback speed, based on the index of the video frame data being different from the index of the audio frame data.
