Sony patents LED design that stops metal bumps from touching light parts
Sony describes a light-emitting element where a raised section on a non-lighting part of the chip keeps metal connection bumps away from the active light area. This physical barrier prevents the bumps from protruding into the side of the light-emitting section during manufacturing.
In the filing’s own words
A surface emitting element capable of suppressing protrusion of a bump to a side of a light emitting element constituent portion when an electrode provided on a dummy element constituent portion is connected to a substrate via the bump is provided. The surface emitting element according to the present technology includes: a base portion including a substrate; and a light emitting element constituent portion and a dummy element constituent portion provided to be spaced apart in an in-plane direction on one surface of the base portion, in which an electrode including an external connection surface is provided on the dummy element constituent portion, and a convex portion protruding to a side opposite to a side of the base portion more than the external connection surface is provided in a proximity portion relatively close to the light emitting element constituent portion, of the dummy element constituent portion. According to the surface emitting element according to the present technology, it is possible to provide the surface emitting element capable of suppressing protrusion of the bump to a side of the light emitting element constituent portion in a case where the electrode provided on the dummy element constituent portion is connected to the substrate via the bump.
What exactly they claim (claim 1)
1. A surface emitting element comprising: a base portion including a substrate; and a light emitting element constituent portion and a dummy element constituent portion provided to be spaced apart in an in-plane direction on one surface of the base portion, wherein an electrode including an external connection surface is provided on the dummy element constituent portion, and a convex portion protruding to a side opposite to a side of the base portion more than the external connection surface is provided in a proximity portion relatively close to the light emitting element constituent portion, of the dummy element constituent portion.
