Google patents a method for sequence models to stop processing early
Google has filed a patent for a type of computer model that processes data in steps rather than all at once. The system checks if it has finished analyzing each part of the data and stops working on those parts while continuing on others.
In the filing’s own words
Methods, systems, and apparatus, including computer programs encoded on computer storage media, for implementing a sequence-to-sequence model that is recurrent in depth while employing self-attention to combine information from different parts of sequences.
What exactly they claim (claim 1)
1. A method performed by one or more computers, the method comprising: receiving an input sequence comprising a plurality of input elements, each input element having a respective initial input representation; repeatedly performing a depth-recurrent decoding process for a plurality of iterations to generate an additional output element of an output sequence on each iteration of the plurality of iterations, wherein performing each iteration of the depth-recurrent decoding process comprises: repeatedly revising, in parallel, input representations of the input sequence and output elements on prior iterations, wherein revising the representation comprises; determining whether a stop condition is met for each respective element; in response to determining that the stop condition is met for a first element of the input sequence, halting revisions for the first element; and continuing to revise a representation of a second element of the input sequence at the subsequent processing step until a stop condition is met for the second element.
