Samsung patents audio packet control to skip optional data on weak links
Samsung has filed a patent for a method that manages how audio data is sent between devices, such as from a phone to wireless headphones. The system sends essential audio packets first and only sends extra, optional data if the connection is fast enough to confirm receipt before a set time limit expires.
In the filing’s own words
A method of an electronic device, includes: transmitting, from among packets of a first set to be sequentially transmitted for an output of first audio, to the external electronic device, a first packet including data for the output of the first audio; based on receiving, before a flush timeout of the first packet, an ACK packet regarding the first packet, transmitting, from among one or more remaining packets of the first set, a second packet including data optional for the output of the first audio; and based on not receiving, before the flush timeout of the first packet, the ACK packet from the external electronic device: canceling to transmit the packets of the first set, and transmitting, from among packets of a second set to be transmitted for an output of second audio next to the first audio, a third packet including data for the output of the second audio.
What exactly they claim (claim 1)
1. An electronic device comprising: communication circuitry; at least one processor including processing circuitry; and memory storing instructions that, when executed by the at least one processor individually or collectively, cause the electronic device to: first transmit, by using the communication circuitry, from among packets of a first set to be sequentially transmitted for an output of first audio, through a communication link between the electronic device and an external electronic device, to the external electronic device, a first packet including data mandatory for the output of the first audio, based on receiving, before a flush timeout of the first packet, an acknowledgement (ACK) packet regarding the first packet from the external electronic device, transmit, by using the communication circuitry, from among one or more remaining packets of the first set, a second packet including data optional for the output of the first audio, and based on not receiving, until the flush timeout of the first packet, the ACK packet from the external electronic device: cancel transmitting the packets of the first set, and transmit, by using the communication circuitry, from among packets of a second set to be sequentially transmitted for an output of second audio next to the first audio, through the communication link, to the external electronic device, a third packet including data mandatory for the output of the second audio.
