Samsung patents image filter that skips similar pixels
Samsung describes a method where an electronic device checks how similar neighboring pixels are in an image. It then uses an AI model to apply quality-improving filters only to pixels that meet a specific similarity threshold, while skipping the rest.
In the filing’s own words
An electronic device includes a processor and a memory for storing instructions. When executed by the processor, the instructions cause the electronic device to: identify the similarity between a plurality of pixels that constitute an image; control an artificial intelligence model driving module on the basis of the identified similarity between the plurality of pixels to apply a plurality of filters configured to perform image quality improvement of the image to first set of pixels that satisfy a designated similarity condition from among the plurality of pixels; and control the artificial intelligence model driving module to limit application of the plurality of filters to a second set of pixels that do not satisfy the designated similarity condition from among the plurality of pixels.
What exactly they claim (claim 1)
1. An electronic device comprising: a processor; and memory storing instructions, wherein the instructions, when executed by the processor, cause the electronic device to: identify a similarity between a plurality of pixels in an image; based on the identified similarity between the plurality of pixels, control an artificial intelligence model driving module to apply a plurality of filters to a first set of pixels satisfying a specified similarity condition among the plurality of pixels; and control the artificial intelligence model driving module to bypass applying the plurality of filters to a second set of pixels that do not satisfy the specified similarity condition among the plurality of pixels.
