Samsung patents sliding phone design with dielectric to improve signal
Samsung has filed a patent for an electronic device with two sliding housings that overlap when extended. The design places a non-conductive material, known as a dielectric, in the overlapping area to help the device send and receive wireless signals without interference from the metal parts.
In the filing’s own words
An electronic device may include: a first housing including a conductive material; a second housing slidably coupled to the first housing, including at least one first conductive portion, and including a conductive material; a communication circuit disposed in an inner space of the electronic device and configured to transmit and/or receive wireless signals in a first frequency band through the at least one first conductive portion; and at least one dielectric disposed between the first housing and the second housing, wherein in a slide-out state, the electronic device includes an overlapping area where the first housing and the second housing at least partially overlap each other, and the at least one dielectric may be disposed in the overlapping area.
What exactly they claim (claim 1)
1. An electronic device, comprising: a first housing comprising a conductive material; a second housing slidably coupled to the first housing, comprising at least one first conductive portion, and comprising a conductive material; a communication circuit disposed in an inner space of the electronic device and configured to transmit and/or receive a wireless signal in a first frequency band through the at least one first conductive portion; and at least one dielectric disposed between the first housing and the second housing, wherein, in a slide-out state, the electronic device comprises an overlapping area in which the first housing and the second housing at least partially overlap each other, and the at least one dielectric is disposed in the overlapping area.
