Samsung patents 3D-based editing for 2D photos
Samsung has filed a patent for a method that lets users edit a flat photo by using a 3D model of the main subject. The system separates the subject from the background, changes the subject's size, position, or angle using the 3D model, and then repairs the background to match the new layout.
In the filing’s own words
Disclosed is an electronic device for editing a 2D image by using a 3D model. The electronic device may be configured to identify an input 2D image including a first subject and a background, segment the input 2D image into a first subject image including the first subject and a first background image including the background, perform image processing for changing at least one of the size, the location, or the direction of the first subject by using a 3D model for the first subject to generate a second subject image including the changed first subject, perform image processing on at least one of a subject exclusion region in the first background image or an extension region outside the first background image to generate a second background image including the changed background, and generate an output 2D image by combining the second subject image with the second background image.
What exactly they claim (claim 1)
1. An electronic device comprising: memory comprising at least one storage medium storing instructions; and at least one processor comprising processing circuitry, wherein the instructions, when executed by the at least one processor, cause the electronic device to: identify an input two-dimensional ( 2 D) image including a first subject and a background, separate the input 2 D image into a first subject image including the first subject and a first background image including the background, perform image processing to change at least one of a size, a position, or an orientation of the first subject using a three-dimensional ( 3 D) model for the first subject, to generate a second subject image including a changed first subject, perform image processing for at least one of a subject exclusion area within the first background image or an extended area outside the first background image, to generate a second background image including a changed background, the extended area being associated with a change of the first subject, and combine the second subject image and the second background image to generate an output 2 D image.
