Sony patents LCD screen layout with specific light-blocking slits

Sony describes a liquid crystal display design that uses two different types of light-blocking masks on the back of the screen. One mask covers the electrical wires, while a wider rectangular mask covers the pixel components, leaving a small gap or slit between them.

Why it mattersThis is a routine improvement to display manufacturing that likely helps control light leakage or improve screen uniformity, but it is too technical for most consumers to notice directly.

In the filing’s own words

A first display apparatus of an embodiment of the present disclosure includes: a liquid crystal layer; a first substrate including a plurality of scanning lines and a plurality of signal lines intersecting each other, and a plurality of pixel transistors provided at respective intersecting sections of the plurality of scanning lines and the plurality of signal lines; and a second substrate disposed to be opposed to the first substrate with the liquid crystal layer interposed therebetween, with the second substrate including a first light-blocking section covering at least one of the plurality of scanning lines and the plurality of signal lines in a plan view, and a second light-blocking section covering at least a portion of each of the plurality of pixel transistors, having a substantially rectangular shape, and being wider than the first light-blocking section, in which a slit is provided between the first and second light-blocking sections.

What exactly they claim (claim 1)

1. A display apparatus comprising: a liquid crystal layer; a first substrate including a plurality of scanning lines and a plurality of signal lines that intersect each other, and a plurality of pixel transistors provided at respective intersecting sections of the plurality of scanning lines and the plurality of signal lines; and a second substrate disposed to be opposed to the first substrate with the liquid crystal layer interposed therebetween, the second substrate including a first light-blocking section and a second light-blocking section, the first light-blocking section being provided along at least one of the plurality of scanning lines and the plurality of signal lines in a plan view, the second light-blocking section covering at least a portion of each of the plurality of pixel transistors, the second light-blocking section having a substantially rectangular shape and being wider than the first light-blocking section, wherein a slit is provided between the first light-blocking section and the second light-blocking section.
