Sony patents cleaner carbon filter made from plant waste
Sony describes a method for making porous carbon filters from plant-based materials. The process involves heating the plants to high temperatures and then using acid or alkali under pressure to remove leftover silicon.
In the filing’s own words
The present technology improves a porous carbon material that uses a material of plant origin as a raw material and a method of producing the same, and the main object of the present technology is to provide a technology capable of reducing the amount of a residual silicon component in a material when producing the porous carbon material that uses a material of plant origin as a raw material. As a result of extensive research, the present inventors have found that it is useful to carbonize a material of plant origin and then perform acid or alkali treatment under pressurized conditions, and completed the method of producing a porous carbon material according to the present technology.
What exactly they claim (claim 1)
1. A method of producing a porous carbon material, comprising: carbonizing a material of plant origin at 400° C. to 1400° C. and then performing acid or alkali treatment under conditions of more than 0.1 MPa and not more than 25.0 MPa.
