Google patents neural networks to help phones find their location
This patent describes a system where artificial intelligence models help determine a device's location. A neural network at the cell tower creates a specific signal, while another network on the phone combines that signal with local sensor data to calculate a precise position.
In the filing’s own words
A wireless communication system employs DNNs or other neural networks to provide for RAT-assisted positioning of UEs. A TX DNN at the BS generates and provides for wireless transmission of a reference signal to the UE. An RX DNN at the UE receives the reference signal and local UE sensor data as input, and from this input generates a UE measurement and sensor report. A TX DNN at the UE receives the report as an input, and from this input generates an RF signal representing the UE measurement and sensor report for transmission to the BS. An RX DNN at the BS receives the report from the RF signal as input, and from this input generates a position estimate of the UE.
What exactly they claim (claim 1)
1. A computer-implemented method, in a first device, comprising: receiving reference signal information as an input to a transmit neural network of the first device; generating, by the transmit neural network according to a first neural network architectural configuration, a first output based on the reference signal information, the first output representing a reference signal; controlling a radio frequency (RF) antenna interface of the first device to transmit a first RF signal representative of the first output for receipt by a second device; responsive to transmitting the first RF signal, receiving, at a receive neural network of the first device, an input representing one or more RF signals associated with the second device; and generating, by the receive neural network according to a second neural network architectural configuration, a second output representing a position estimate of the second device based on the input to the receive neural network.
