Samsung patents foldable phone that changes screen based on back touches
Samsung describes a foldable electronic device with a display that spans two connected housing sections. The device uses sensors on the back surfaces to detect where and how a user touches the device. Based on the specific location and type of touch, the processor adjusts how information from different apps is displayed on the screen.
In the filing’s own words
An electronic device is provided, which includes a first housing having a first surface, a second surface facing an opposite direction to the first surface, and a first lateral member surrounding a first space between the first surface and the second surface and a second housing, which is connected to the first housing to be foldable about a folding axis by using a hinge structure, and having, in an unfolded state, a third surface facing same direction as the first surface, a fourth surface facing an opposite direction to the third surface, and a second lateral member surrounding a second space between the third surface and the fourth surface. The electronic device includes a first display provided on at least a portion of the first surface and at least a portion of the third surface.
What exactly they claim (claim 1)
1. An electronic device comprising: a first housing comprising a first surface facing a first direction, a second surface facing a second direction opposite to the first surface, and a first lateral member surrounding a first space between the first surface and the second surface; a second housing connected to the first housing, and configured to be foldable about a folding axis, the second housing comprising a third surface facing the first direction in an unfolded state, a fourth surface facing the second direction in the unfolded state, and a second lateral member surrounding a second space between the third surface and the fourth surface; a first display provided on at least a portion of the first surface and at least a portion of the third surface; a sensor circuit; and a processor operatively connected to the first display and the sensor circuit, wherein the processor is configured to: display first information corresponding to a first application in a first area on the first display; display second information corresponding to a second application in a second area on the first display; acquire sensor information through the sensor circuit; identify whether a user input is detected on the second surface or the fourth surface based on the acquired sensor information; identify, based on the user input being detected, a type of the user input and a location at which the user input has been detected; based on identifying that the type of the user input corresponds to a first user input type and the user input is detected in a first partial area of either the second surface or the fourth surface, display, on the first display, at least one of the first information or the second information according to a first display attribute corresponding to the first user input type; and based on identifying that the type of the user input corresponds to the first user input type and the user input is detected in a second partial area of either the second surface or the fourth surface, display, on the first display, at least one of the first information or the second information according to a second display attribute corresponding to the first user input type.
