Samsung patents curved phone glass that gets thinner at the edges
Samsung has been granted a patent for a protective glass cover used on flexible displays. The design features a glass panel that is thicker in the center and gradually becomes thinner and narrower as it curves around the sides of the device. A cushioning layer sits between this glass and the screen to protect the display.
In the filing’s own words
An electronic device and a method of manufacturing the electronic device are provided. The electronic device includes: a flexible display; and a cover window disposed on the flexible display, wherein the cover window includes a glass member and a buffer member disposed between the glass member and the flexible display, wherein the glass member includes at least one flat area and a bending area extending from the at least one flat area, and wherein a thickness of at least a portion of the bending area continuously decreases from a thickness of the at least one flat area as the bending area extends from the at least one flat area, and a width of the at least the portion of the bending area continuously decreases from a width of the at least one flat area as the bending area extends from the at least one flat area.
What exactly they claim (claim 1)
1. An electronic device comprising: a flexible display; and a cover window disposed on the flexible display, wherein the cover window comprises a glass member and a buffer member disposed between the glass member and the flexible display, wherein the glass member comprises at least one flat area and a bending area extending from the at least one flat area, and wherein a thickness of at least a portion of the bending area continuously decreases from a thickness of the at least one flat area as the bending area extends from the at least one flat area, and a width of the at least the portion of the bending area continuously decreases from a width of the at least one flat area as the bending area extends from the at least one flat area, wherein the bending area comprises a first recess on a first surface facing the buffer member and recessed in a first curved shape, and a second recess on an edge of the bending area and recessed in a second curved shape, and wherein the second recess extends continuously from the first recess.
