Nvidia patents chip design using backside metal to speed up data writing
Nvidia has been granted a patent for a memory chip design that uses metal tracks on the back of the silicon to create extra electrical storage. This added storage helps the chip's internal circuits push data into memory cells more reliably by providing a temporary voltage boost.
In the filing’s own words
An electrical device including a substrate having a frontside surface and a backside surface and a back-side insulating layer with back-side metal tracks therein, the back-side insulating layer located on the backside surface. At least portions of an adjacent pair of the back-side metal tracks generate a back-side boost capacitance connected between a first node coupled to a gate contact of a transistor of a write driver circuit of the electrical device and a second node coupled to a drain contact of the transistor and a circuit ground. Also disclosed is method manufacturing the electrical device.
What exactly they claim (claim 1)
1. An electrical device, the electrical device comprising: a substrate having a frontside surface and a backside surface; and a back-side insulating layer with back-side metal tracks therein, the back-side insulating layer located on the backside surface, wherein at least portions of an adjacent pair of the back-side metal tracks generate a back-side boost capacitance connected between a first node coupled to a gate contact of a transistor of a write driver circuit of the electrical device and a second node coupled to a drain contact of the transistor and a circuit ground.
