Google patents search results with extra info from other websites
This patent describes a system that adds extra details to search results by pulling information from websites other than the main answer. It ranks these extra details and shows them in a scrollable list, allowing users to click through to the original source for more context.
In the filing’s own words
A flexible annotation framework normalizes auxiliary information from diverse sources, ranks the information for an individual search result, and provides a lightweight or full display of the auxiliary information in an annotation for the search result. An annotation thus displays information not typically part of the details included in the search result. An example method comprises, for at least one item in a search result page, identifying at least one annotation of a first annotation type in an annotation data store that references the item, identifying at least one annotation for a second annotation type in an annotation data store that references the item, ranking the annotation of the first annotation type and the annotation of the second annotation type and providing the highest ranked annotation as part of a search result for the item in the search result page.
What exactly they claim (claim 1)
1. A method comprising: generating a response to a query from information associated with a primary source; generating a first annotation and a second annotation from a domain distinct from the primary source, the first annotation including a first snippet of text from a first resource associated with the domain and the second annotation including a second snippet of text from a second resource associated with the domain; providing a search result for the query that includes the response, the first annotation and the second annotation; and causing the search result to be displayed, the search result displaying the first annotation and the second annotation in a carousel interface and the search result including a first control identifying the domain and a second control identifying the domain, the first control displaying the first annotation and being selectable to navigate to the first resource and the second control displaying the second annotation and being selectable to navigate to the second resource, the first resource being different from the second resource.
