Netflix patents system to run database queries in fast memory
Netflix describes a method for running structured queries on data by loading entire datasets into a computer's fast, temporary memory. The system checks the structure of the data before running the query to ensure the request is valid.
In the filing’s own words
In various embodiments, a computer-implemented method comprises receiving a structured query identifying a plurality of source datasets, determining, based on a plurality of schemas associated with the plurality of source datasets, the plurality of source datasets associated with the structured query, loading a plurality of in-memory datasets, each in-memory dataset representing a source dataset in the plurality of source datasets, and executing the structured query on each of the plurality of in-memory datasets by causing portions of the structured query to be applied to each of the plurality of in-memory datasets to generate a query result.
What exactly they claim (claim 1)
1. A computer-implemented method comprising: receiving a structured query identifying a plurality of source datasets; retrieving a plurality of schemas from one or more data models associated with the plurality of source datasets, wherein each schema included in the plurality of schemas defines a structure of a record included in a source dataset of the plurality of source datasets; validating, based on the plurality of schemas, one or more parameters of the structured query; upon validating the structured query, loading, into volatile memory, a plurality of in-memory datasets, wherein each in-memory dataset corresponds to an entirety of a source dataset in the plurality of source datasets; and executing the structured query on each in-memory dataset of the plurality of in-memory datasets by causing portions of the structured query to be applied to each in-memory dataset of the plurality of in-memory datasets to generate a query result that includes one or more records included in the plurality of in-memory datasets.
