Samsung patents tool to turn photos into custom filters
Samsung has been granted a patent for a method that lets users create custom image filters on their devices. The system works by letting you pick a photo you like, extracting its visual style, and applying that style to another picture in real-time.
In the filing’s own words
An electronic device is provided. The electronic device includes a display, a processor functionally connected with the display, and a memory functionally connected with the processor. The memory stores instructions configured to, when executed, enable the processor to display a first image through the display, display one or more second images through the display while displaying the first image, select a third image from among the one or more second images, identify a value of at least one property of the third image, generate a filter for applying the value of the at least one property to an image, apply the value of the at least one property to the first image using the filter, display the first image, to which the value of the at least one property is applied, through the display, and store the filter in the memory.
What exactly they claim (claim 1)
1. An electronic device comprising: a display; at least one processor comprising processing circuitry; and memory storing instructions that, when executed by the at least one processor individually or collectively, cause the electronic device to: display, via the display, a first image, receive a first user input for editing the first image while the first image is displayed via the display, based at least in part on the first user input, display, via the display and concurrently with the first image, a first user interface (UI) object for generating a new filter, based at least in part on a second user input with respect to the first UI object, display, via the display, a plurality of images previously stored in the memory, based at least in part on a third user input with respect to a second image among the plurality of images, generate, as the new filter, a first filter corresponding to the second image, based on the generating of the first filter, display, via the display, a third image and a second UI object, the third image corresponding to the first image, the second UI object corresponding to the first filter, the third image being generated by applying the first filter to the first image, the second UI object including a thumbnail image indicative of the second image, and store the first filter in the memory.
