Sony patents VR headset with rear strap knob for easy size adjustment

Patent drawing
Patent drawing from the official filing.

Sony has been granted a patent for a head-mounted display featuring a wearing band that wraps around the user's head. The design includes a movable section on the back of the strap that can slide to tighten or loosen the fit. A large, rotatable knob on this section allows users to adjust the length of the band easily.

Why it mattersThis design aims to make putting on and taking off VR headsets more comfortable by simplifying the process of adjusting the fit to different head sizes.

In the filing’s own words

A head-mounted display includes: a main body containing a display; a wearing band extending from the main body to a rear side and having a shape enclosing a head of a user as a whole; a right-side extending section configured to make up a right-side part of the wearing band; a left-side extending section configured to make up a left-side part of the wearing band; a movable section configured to make up a part of a rear side of the wearing band, to link a rear section of the right-side extending section with a rear section of the left-side extending section, and to be movable relative to the right-side extending section and the left-side extending section in a retracting direction in which the length of the wearing band is decreased and in an extending direction in which the length of the wearing band is increased; and a first manipulating member operable by a user and rotatably provided on the movable section with an axis section that extends in a front-rear direction.

What exactly they claim (claim 1)

1. A head-mounted display comprising: a main body containing a display; a wearing band extending from the main body to a rear side and having a shape enclosing a head of a user as a whole; a right-side extending section configured to make up a right-side part of the wearing band; a left-side extending section configured to make up a left-side part of the wearing band; a movable section configured to make up a part of a rear side of the wearing band, to link a rear section of the right-side extending section with a rear section of the left-side extending section, and to be movable relative to the right-side extending section and the left-side extending section in a retracting direction in which a length of the wearing band is decreased and in an extending direction in which the length of the wearing band is increased; a first manipulating member operable by the user and rotatably provided on the movable section with an axis section that extends in a front-rear direction, wherein: a vertical width of the first manipulating member is larger than a vertical width of the movable section, the movable section includes a holding member holding at least a portion of the first manipulating member, the first manipulating member is rotatably supported by the axis section so that at least one of an upper portion of the first manipulating member and a lower portion of the first manipulating member protrudes from the holding member, the upper portion of the first manipulating member is exposed from an upper opening formed in the holding member, and the lower portion of the first manipulating member is exposed from a lower opening formed in the holding member.
