Nvidia patents tank-based dual-mode datacenter cooling system
Nvidia has patented a cooling system for datacenters that uses a tank of liquid to submerge servers. It combines two methods: cold plates attached to hot parts and direct liquid immersion for cooler parts, both managed by units inside the tank.
In the filing’s own words
A system includes one or more first cooling loops to cool one or more first components of one or more servers at least partially submerged in an immersion coolant tank, and one or more second cooling loops to cool one or more second components of the one or more servers. The system can flow first coolant to cold plates to cool high-power server components and flow second coolant to cool low-power server components by immersion cooling.
What exactly they claim (claim 1)
1. A system comprising: one or more first cooling loops to flow a first coolant to cool one or more first components of one or more servers at least partially submerged in an immersion coolant tank by cold plate cooling, wherein at least one of the one or more first cooling loops comprises a first coolant distribution unit (CDU) disposed within the immersion coolant tank, wherein the first CDU is to cool the first coolant, and wherein one or more first manifolds extend from the first CDU within the immersion coolant tank to distribute cooled first coolant to the one or more servers; and one or more second cooling loops to flow a second coolant to cool one or more second components of the one or more servers at least partially submerged in the immersion coolant tank by immersion cooling, wherein at least one of the one or more second cooling loops comprises a second CDU disposed within the immersion coolant tank, wherein the second CDU is to cool the second coolant, wherein a second manifold extends from the second CDU within the immersion coolant tank to distribute cooled second coolant from the second CDU within the immersion coolant tank, and wherein the second manifold is disposed beneath the one or more servers.
