Google patents system for booking future self-driving rides
This patent describes a method for ride-hailing systems to accept requests for trips scheduled far in the future. It stores these requests and automatically assigns an autonomous vehicle to the trip once the time comes, based on predicted fleet capacity.
In the filing’s own words
The technology provides ride hailing systems and methods. This can include receiving, by a ride hailing system, a ride hail request from a user's client device. The ride hail request includes information about a pickup or a drop-off to be scheduled. The process includes obtaining real-time information including fleet constraint information associated with a fleet of vehicles, and applying the received information and the real-time information to a ride hailing model that was trained on training data including customer preference data and historical fleet trip information. The process includes obtaining from the model a set of ride hail suggestions including pickup positions, drop-off positions, walking paths from a given pickup position to a vehicle, and/or walking paths from a given drop-off position to a destination. The process also includes sending the set of ride hail suggestions to the client device for presentation to the user.
What exactly they claim (claim 1)
1. A computer-implemented method, comprising: receiving, by one or more processors of a ride hailing system, a ride hail request from a client device of a user, the ride hail request including information about at least one of a pickup to be scheduled or a drop-off to be scheduled; determining, by the one or more processors, that the ride hail request is for a future time outside of a current scheduling window for trip planning by the ride hailing system; upon determining that the ride hail request is for the future time outside of the current scheduling window, determining, by the one or more processors, to provisionally accept the ride hail request based on an expected autonomous vehicle fleet capacity for a timeframe encompassing the future time; upon provisionally accepting the ride hail request, storing, by the one or more processors, the ride hail request in a future trip record; determining, by the one or more processors, when an updated version of the current scheduling window encompasses the future time; upon determining that updated version of the current scheduling window encompasses the future time, retrieving, by the one or more processors, the ride hail request stored in the future trip record; attempting to satisfy the ride hail request with a selected vehicle configured to provide the pickup or the drop-off in an autonomous driving mode, wherein attempting to satisfy the ride hail request comprises sending, by the one or more processors, instructions to the selected vehicle to cause the selected vehicle to operate according to a proposed trip plan, the proposed trip plan being based on the pickup or the drop-off; and sending, by the one or more processors, a notification to the client device indicating whether the attempt to satisfy the ride hail request with the selected vehicle was successful.
