Sony patents display tech that blocks stray light in light guide plates
Sony describes a display system that uses a light guide plate to direct image light toward the user's eye. The design includes internal reflection surfaces to steer the light and specific shielding parts to block unwanted stray light.
In the filing’s own words
Provided is a display apparatus that includes an image light generation apparatus that generates image light and a light guide plate that guides the image light from the image light generation apparatus to an eyeball. The light guide plate includes a light guide plate main body including a light incident surface upon which the image light enters, and an optical surface group including a plurality of optical surfaces that guides the image light via the light incident surface. The light guide plate includes at least one reflection surface that is provided inside the light guide plate main body and reflects the image light via the optical surface group to a side of the eyeball, and at least one light-shielding portion that is provided in the light guide plate main body and shields a stray light component of the image light.
What exactly they claim (claim 1)
1. A display apparatus, comprising: an image light generation apparatus configured to generate image light; and a light guide plate configured to guide the image light from the image light generation apparatus to an eyeball, wherein the light guide plate includes: a light guide plate main body including: a light incident surface, wherein the image light enters the light guide plate main body via the light incident surface, and an optical surface group including a plurality of optical surfaces, wherein the plurality of optical surfaces is configured to guide the image light via the light incident surface; at least one reflection surface inside the light guide plate main body, wherein the at least one reflection surface is configured to reflect the image light via the optical surface group to a side of the eyeball; and at least one light-shielding portion inside the light guide plate main body, wherein the at least one light-shielding portion is configured to shield a stray light component of the image light, and the plurality of optical surfaces includes: a first optical surface configured to totally internally reflect the image light via the light incident surface, and a second optical surface that faces the light incident surface, wherein the second optical surface is configured to bend the image light totally internally reflected on the first optical surface toward the at least one reflection surface.
