Samsung patents modular water purifier with swappable cold water units
Samsung has patented a water purifier design that splits the device into separate, connectable modules for filtering, control, and water dispensing. The system uses electrical connections to automatically detect when a user attaches a cold water or hot water unit, then updates the display to show the correct water mode.
In the filing’s own words
A water purifier is disclosed. The water purifier according to a concept of the disclosure includes: a first module including a filter unit including a plurality of filters; a second module including a controller configured to control the first module, the second module coupled with the first module; and a water supply module including a display connected to the second module and displaying operation information of the water purifier, and a water supply nozzle receiving purified water from the first module and discharging the purified water to outside, wherein the controller is configured to control the display to display a purified water supply mode corresponding to the first module coupled with the second module.
What exactly they claim (claim 1)
1. A water purifier comprising: a first module including: a filter unit including a plurality of filters configured to purify water, a first input and output port, and a cold water unit or a cold and hot water unit that is couplable to the filter unit and includes: a first connector including a connection port, and an evaporator that is configured to cool the purified water while the cold water unit or the cold and hot water unit is coupled to the filter unit; a second module couplable to the first module, the second module including: a second connector including a direct current port and an alternating current port, a controller, and a second input and output port that is electrically connectable to the first input and output port; a direct current wire connectable between the connection port and the direct current port; an alternating current wire connectable between the connection port and the alternating current port; and a water supply module including: a display connectable to the second module, the display configured to display operation information of the water purifier while the display is connected to the second module, and a water supply nozzle to receive the purified water from the first module and discharge the purified water to an outside of the water purifier, wherein the controller is configured to: while the second module is coupled with the first module, the direct current wire is connected between the connection port and the direct current port, and the alternating current wire is connected between the connection port and the alternating current port, control the first module, and while the second module is coupled to the first module, the direct current wire is connected between the connection port and the direct current port, the alternating current wire is connected between the connection port and the alternating current port, and the display is connected to the second module, control the display to display a purified water supply mode, and, while the second module is coupled to the first module, the display is connected to the second module, the direct current wire is connected between the connection port and the direct current port, the alternating current wire is connected between the connection port and the alternating current port, and the cold water unit or the cold and hot water unit is coupled to the filter unit, recognize when the second input and output port becomes electrically connected to the first input and output port so as to, upon the cold water unit being coupled to the filter unit, identify the cold water unit being coupled to the filter unit and, based on identifying the cold water unit is coupled to the filter unit, control the display to display a cold water supply mode, or upon the cold and hot water unit being coupled to the filter unit, identify the cold and hot water unit being coupled to the filter unit and, based on identifying the cold and hot water unit is coupled to the filter unit, control the display to display a cold and hot water supply mode.
