Amazon patents fraud check that sends a text to a specific number
Amazon has been granted a patent for a security system that checks if a user is a bot before allowing them to perform an action. When a request looks suspicious, the system sends a link to the user's device that automatically drafts a text message to a specific number. Once the text is sent and received, the system confirms the user is real and completes the task.
In the filing’s own words
Fraud verification with inbound telephony-based verification is provided. A user through a computing device may request an action from a service. A verification system may receive this request and ascertain the risk level for the request is above a threshold triggering inbound telephony-based verification. The risk assessment may be based on characteristics of the request, such as a phone number corresponding to the request or a network address corresponding to the requesting computing device. To conduct the inbound telephony-based verification, the verification system may send the computing device instructions to send a verification message through the phone network to a specified destination. On receipt of the message at the destination, the verification system may verify that the request is not fraudulent and cause the performance of the requested action.
What exactly they claim (claim 1)
1. A system comprising: a computer-readable memory storing executable instructions; and one or more processors programmed by the executable instructions to: receive input from a computing device through a data network, wherein the input comprises a request to perform an action; determine to perform telephony-based message verification prior to performance of the action; provide the computing device with verification instructions through the data network to send a message through a phone network to a specified destination, wherein the verification instructions include a deep link, wherein selection of the deep link generates a draft of the message, and wherein the draft of the message is addressed to the specified destination; and on receipt of the message through the phone network, cause performance of the action.
