Samsung patents flexible screen that skips animations to save battery

This patent describes a device with a flexible display that changes size as the housing moves. It adjusts how the screen updates during this movement based on the battery level. If the battery is low, the device stops redrawing the screen in real-time to save power, only updating the image once the display reaches its final size.

Why it mattersThis could make foldable or rollable devices last longer on a single charge by reducing the processing power needed during physical movement.

In the filing’s own words

An electronic device includes a housing including a first housing and a second housing movably coupled to the first housing, a battery, a flexible display, wherein a size of a display area of the flexible display, which is exposed to outside of the electronic device, is changed from a first size to a second size based on a movement of the second housing, at least one processor comprising processing circuitry, and memory including one or more storage mediums storing instructions which, when executed by the at least one processor, cause the electronic device to identify a power level of the battery, display a first screen including an object in the display area corresponding to the first size, when the power level of the battery is within a first specified range, while the size of the display area is changed from the first size to the second size, display a second screen by redrawing the object included in the first screen according to the size of the display area, and when the power level of the battery is within a second specified range, while the size of the display area is changed from the first size to the second size, display a second screen without redrawing the object included in the first screen, and display, if the size of the display area is the second size, a third screen by redrawing the object included in the first screen.

What exactly they claim (claim 1)

1. An electronic device comprising: a housing including a first housing and a second housing movably coupled to the first housing; a battery; a flexible display, wherein a size of a display area of the flexible display, which is exposed to outside of the electronic device, is changed from a first size to a second size based on a movement of the second housing; at least one processor comprising processing circuitry; and memory including one or more storage mediums storing instructions which, when executed by the at least one processor, cause the electronic device to: identify a power level of the battery, display a first screen on the display area corresponding to the first size, when the power level of the battery is greater than a first level, while the size of the display area is being changed from the first size to the second size, display a second screen by redrawing the first screen according to the changing size of the display area, wherein screen redrawing is continuously performed in response to a rolling movement or a sliding movement of the flexible display, and when the power level of the battery is less than or equal to the first level, while the size of the display area is being changed from the first size to the second size, display a second screen without redrawing in the first screen, and display, after a size of the display area changes to the second size, a third screen by redrawing the first screen according to the second size of the display area.
