Samsung patents foldable phone feature that suggests apps based on screen content
Samsung has been granted a patent for a method on shape-changeable devices, such as foldable phones, that analyzes what is currently displayed on the screen. If the system finds that the content relates to another installed app, it shows a visual icon that prompts the user to unfold the device to use that app.
In the filing’s own words
A shape-changeable electronic apparatus according to an embodiment includes: a display module having a first area and a second area. In response to the shape of the electronic apparatus being a first shape, the first area is activated, and in response to the shape of the electronic apparatus being a second shape, the second area is activated. The electronic apparatus further includes a memory storing computer-executable instructions and a processor which executes the instructions. When the instructions are executed, in the first shape, first content related to a first application is displayed in the first area. Information is identified from the first content. The presence of a candidate application to which the identified information can be applied is determined. In response to the candidate application being present, a graphic object capable of receiving an input for changing the shape of the electronic apparatus is displayed on the first area.
What exactly they claim (claim 1)
1. An electronic device that is transformable, comprising: a display comprising a first area and a second area, wherein the first area is displayable when the electronic device is in a first shape and the second area is additionally displayable when the electronic device is in a second shape; at least one processor; and memory electrically connected to the at least one processor and configured to store instructions, wherein the instructions, when executed by at least one processor, cause the electronic device to: when the electronic device is in the first shape, display first content related to a first application in the first area of the display; identify information from the first content displayed in the first area; determine whether there is at least one candidate application to which the identified information is applicable; and in response to determining that there is the at least one candidate application to which the identified information is applicable, display, in the first area, a first graphic object configured to receive a user input for changing the shape of the electronic device from the first shape to the second shape.
