Sony patents method to find objects in photos by using known projected images
Sony has filed a patent for a system that helps cameras identify physical objects in a room. It works by projecting a specific image into the space and using that known image as a reference to accurately locate other objects in the photo, even if lighting changes.
In the filing’s own words
Changes in the lighting environment are absorbed, and the extraction target region is inferred with high accuracy. An information processing apparatus is provided, and the information processing apparatus includes a processing unit that infers the region of a physical object in a captured image, on the basis of a non-extraction-target image displayed or projected in an imaging space and the captured image in which the non-extraction-target image and the physical object present in the imaging space are captured. The appearance of the non-extraction-target image depending on the position and orientation of a camera that images the captured image is known.
What exactly they claim (claim 1)
1. An information processing apparatus comprising a processing unit that infers a region of a physical object in a captured image, on a basis of a non-extraction-target image displayed or projected in an imaging space and the captured image in which the non-extraction-target image and the physical object present in the imaging space are captured, wherein an appearance of the non-extraction-target image depending on a position and an orientation of a camera that images the captured image is known.
