Apple patents radio design that reduces unwanted signal noise
Apple describes a wireless circuit that cleans up signals before they are sent out. It uses a specific arrangement of switches and signal phases to cancel out extra, unwanted frequencies that can interfere with other devices.
In the filing’s own words
An electronic device may be provided with wireless circuitry that includes a transmit path. The transmit path may include a digital-to-analog converter (DAC), a multi-phase mixer, a non-linear component, and a vector interpolator. The DAC may output an in-phase and quadrature-phase (I/Q) baseband signal. The vector interpolator may output eight different phases of a baseband signal separated by 45 degrees based on the I/Q baseband signal. The mixer may include a set of eight switches coupled in parallel between the vector interpolator and the non-linear component. Each switch may receive a respective one of the eight phases of baseband signal and may be toggled by a respective one of eight different equal magnitude phases of a local oscillator signal. This may cancel out components from the transmitted signal that would otherwise produce spurious emissions such as CIM3 and CIM5 emissions.
What exactly they claim (claim 1)
1. Wireless circuitry comprising: a digital-to-analog converter (DAC); a vector interpolator having an input communicatively coupled to an output of the DAC; a multi-phase mixer having an input communicatively coupled to an output of the vector interpolator; and a non-linear component having an input communicatively coupled to an output of the multi-phase mixer.
