Nvidia patents tool to let users steer AI content output

Patent drawing
Patent drawing from the official filing.

Nvidia describes a system where users can guide artificial intelligence models to produce specific types of content. By selecting examples of what the AI should and should not say, the system creates a 'steering vector' that adjusts the model's behavior during use.

Why it mattersThis offers a practical way for developers or users to fine-tune AI behavior without retraining the entire model, potentially making AI outputs more predictable and aligned with specific needs.

In the filing’s own words

In various examples, user-controlled content steering of machine learning models and systems is described herein. Systems and methods described herein may generate data for steering a model to generate compliant content associated with one or more categories. For instance, a user may use a user interface to select non-compliant content and/or compliant content associated with a category, where the input(s) may then be used to generate a steering input—such as a steering vector(s)—associated with the category. Systems and methods are also described that allow for using the steering input to control content output by the model during deployment. For instance, a user may use a user interface to set a level of steering associated with the category, and a steering input may then be used to steer content output by the model based on the level of steering.

What exactly they claim (claim 1)

1. A method comprising: providing, to one or more user devices, a user interface associated with steering a model; receiving, via the user interface, a request to generate a category for steering content of the model, the request including at least one or more first inputs associated with a non-compliant state corresponding to the category and one or more second inputs associated with a compliant state corresponding to the category; generating, using the model and based at least on the one or more first inputs and the one or more second inputs, one or more steering vectors associated with steering the model with respect to the category; and storing, in one or more databases, the one or more steering vectors in association with the category.
