Samsung patents glass display with LEDs built into holes
Samsung has filed a patent for a display module that uses a glass substrate with many small holes drilled through it. Tiny light-emitting diodes (micro LEDs) are placed inside these holes and connected to electrical contacts to create the image.
In the filing’s own words
A display module is provided. The display module includes a glass substrate including a first surface, a second surface opposite to the first surface, and a plurality of through holes extending from the second surface to the first surface, a plurality of through electrodes, each through electrode partially filling a through hole among the plurality of through holes, and a plurality of micro light emitting diodes (LEDs), each micro LED disposed in a through hole among the plurality of through holes, and electrically connected to a through electrode among the plurality of through electrodes.
What exactly they claim (claim 1)
1. A display module, comprising: a glass substrate including: a first surface, a second surface opposite to the first surface, and a plurality of through holes extending from the second surface to the first surface; a plurality of through electrodes, each through electrode partially filling a through hole among the plurality of through holes; and a plurality of micro light emitting diodes (LEDs), each micro LED disposed in a through hole among the plurality of through holes, and electrically connected to a through electrode among the plurality of through electrodes.
