Sony patents camera method that filters out flicker noise

Patent drawing
Patent drawing from the official filing.

Sony describes an imaging device that separates useful event signals from unwanted noise. It uses specific units to detect flicker in the pixel data and removes it before the final image is processed.

Why it mattersThis could lead to cleaner images in cameras that struggle with artificial light flicker.

In the filing’s own words

Cancelling noise without deleting an event to be detected is disclosed. In one example, an imaging device includes a signal detection unit that detects a first pixel signal, and an event detection unit that detects an event signal on the basis of the first pixel signal and a second pixel signal. A noise detection unit that detects noise on the basis of the first pixel signal and a noise removal unit that removes the noise detected by the noise detection unit from the event signal may be further included. The noise detection unit may include a flicker detection unit that detects a flicker signal on the basis of the first pixel signal, and the noise removal unit may include a flicker removal unit that removes the flicker signal detected by the flicker detection unit from the event signal.

What exactly they claim (claim 1)

1. An imaging device comprising a signal detection unit that detects a first pixel signal, and an event detection unit that detects an event signal on a basis of the first pixel signal and a second pixel signal.
