Google patents network trick to split data for faster transfers
Google describes a system that breaks large data messages into smaller pieces called quanta. It then sends each piece over the least busy network path available to avoid traffic jams.
In the filing’s own words
A system providing congestion aware communications in a collective communication networking environment includes receiving a message for communication from a sender to a receiver, the message comprising a chunk of data having a first amount of data. A slicer divides the chunk of data into smaller portions of data, or quanta. For each quanta, a scheduler module iteratively checks each of a plurality of queue pairs, a queue pair representing a dedicated communication pathway between the sender and receiver. Each QP is checked for a number of outstanding bytes associated with the QP. A QP is selected, the selected QP having the minimum number of outstanding bytes among the plurality of queue pairs. The quanta are scheduled for sending on the selected QP. The outstanding bytes associated with a QP, provides an estimate of the level of congestion experienced by the QP. A quanta may be configured to contain 64 KB.
What exactly they claim (claim 1)
1. A system for collective communication in a computer network comprising: a slicer module receiving a message containing a first amount of data, the slicer dividing the first amount of data into a plurality of quanta, each quanta containing a second smaller amount of data; a scheduler module for selecting a network connection from a plurality of available network connections, comprising a sender and a receiver and scheduling a quantum on the selected network connection wherein the selection of the network connection is based on an estimation of a lowest congestion among the plurality of network connections.
