Apple patents filter design to keep wireless signals clear
Apple has filed a patent for a wireless receiver filter that uses transistors with different voltage thresholds to handle signals. The design allows the circuit to adjust its internal current and resistance depending on whether it is operating in a high or low gain mode.
In the filing’s own words
Wireless circuitry is provided that includes multiple receive paths and a filter circuit configured to receive signals from the multiple receive paths. The filter circuit can include a transconductance circuit. The transconductance circuit can include pull-down transistors having two or more different threshold voltages. The transconductance circuit can further include pull-up transistors having two or more different threshold voltages. Programmable current sources and programmable resistors can be coupled to the source terminals of the pull-down and pull-up transistors and can be selectively tuned depending on whether the transconductance circuit is operating in a first gain mode or a second gain mode. The pull-down and pull-up transistors can have adjustable drivability.
What exactly they claim (claim 1)
1. A wireless receiver comprising: a plurality of receive paths; and a filter circuit configured to receive signals from the plurality of receive paths, wherein the filter circuit includes a transconductance circuit that comprises a first pull-down transistor having a first threshold voltage, and a second pull-down transistor coupled in parallel with the first pull-down transistor and having a second threshold voltage different than the first threshold voltage.
